Food is Free Project
The food is free project - Grow, trade, and feed those who need it. Meet neighbors, promote at home gardening.
Falling Fruit is a great site for urban foraging. It has places you can pick wild foods in your area,. I would caution you that if you see fruit in someones yard or private property make sure you get permission to pick it. I had three HUGE cherry trees in my yard at my old house (we are talking 100+ year old trees) and I would let anyone who asked come pick some. Here is their instagram for falling fruit: https://www.instagram.com/fallingfruit/
Beacon Food Forest
If you live in a bigger community, you might do a search and see if your area or an area near you has a food forest. I am not sure if it is just a hippie washington thing but we have a few food forests here. Designed as permeaculture with native edible plants, bushes, and trees - it is designed to be for anyone in the community to come and take whatever they need. Here is an example of one in Seattle. it's a super cool project.
Seed Library Locator
Every community is different however I recently learned on TikTok that many public libraries have seed libraries. You're free to "check out" seeds as much as you want, and its great if when you harvest you preserve some of your seeds and donate them back to the seed library! Its a fantastic idea. I highly doubt this site is all inclusive so check with your local library or even local conservation district and see if they have a seed library near you!
Local Tool Lending
Another resource that is non-garden related but definitely falls into the reducing waste and improving access to resources is a tool library! We have one nearish to me and it’s a really cool idea. People have donated their older tools and you can go check them out to do all kinds of projects at home!
Learning Skills from your local Conservation Department
Check with your county or city conservation department too. Mine offers free classes surrounding edible gardening and overall sustainability. I am linking my county conservation site because it has recordings of previous classes available for free as well as some free handout PDF's
